Justine Bassani's Artists Statement
All of my paintings chime with emotion. Some have undercurrents that contradict one another.
They are a visual definition of a dichotomy of feelings. They mimic real human thoughts that sometimes
don't always feel logical. I use my canvas to explore things with shapes and color.
I examine thoughts that aren’t always linear by definition. I express vulnerability, sometimes, with a
strong image because we often put up a front that masks our true tenderness. The product of using art
in this way is multi-dimensional to the viewer. The beauty of the human condition is that you can see
through the transparent layers of emotion which makes us all so complex. I think it's important to
examine our own situations using art as a catalyst to bring things to surface. That is why we seek it,
hang it wear it and make it.
When I paint I translate a swell of emotion into one tangible frame, a moment in time, captured.
I am bringing it to you, to feel what I felt when I painted it, and to associate that image with a
piece of yourself. We say that an image is disturbing if we don’t understand it. Images sometimes
can be disturbing, that doesn't mean that the image is bad or negative. If you are moved in any way
when you look at my images my task is accomplished. You don't have to understand what each piece means,
just let them speak to you and you will find they each have a specific voice and something to say.
